I have been asked to recommend folks to join the AIA’s Framework for Design Excellence. The AIA Framework for Design Excellence is basically the top ten toolkit, that has been rebranded by the AIA and is forming the backbone of much of the policy that the AIA is currently setting.
From the AIA's website:
- The Framework for Design Excellence represents the defining principles of good design in the 21st century. Comprised of 10 principles and accompanied by searching questions, the Framework seeks to inform progress toward a zero-carbon, equitable, resilient, and healthy built environment.
Here is what I know:
- The Ask. Provide thought leadership for the Framework for Design Excellence on both the framework and our process of continual improvement and broader adoption. Connect us to important people in your networks who would further the project. Inform how the team designs the resource and help us to gain wider adoption across the profession.
- The Group. We are looking for three individuals representing architecture and adjacent fields with insights into any of the following topics: equity, climate adaptation, mental health, materials transparency, and holistic integration to achieve zero-carbon, equitable, healthy and resilient solutions. We are seeking new voices to add perspective to the Framework from underrepresented backgrounds.
- Time Commitment. This is a two-year commitment with monthly task group meetings. During big pushes for work, these meetings may occur twice a month. These meetings will be one hour long and there will be some work that will need to be done outside of the meeting.
This is a pretty cool assignment. The AIA is attempting to use the framework as the guidelines for most everything the are doing, including awards. Keeping the framework strong will go a long way to achieving the original goal of the AIA COTE Top Ten – one day design awards and COTE Top Ten awards will be the same – green design is good design!
