AIA Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct Updated for the Environment !

The AIA has just (finally!) amended the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct to include new "Obligations to the Public" and  "Obligations to the Environment", that requires architects to advise their clients of their obligations to the environment, obligates architects to promote sustainable design and development, and to implement energy and resource conscious design.  I've attached a marked-up version of the updated code.

Thanks to those who first raised and then pushed this issue through -- that these obligations were missing from AIA's Ethics:  David Pill, of Pill-Maharam Architects, VT, first had the notion. Then I believe the VT AIA chapter, Nadav, Mike Davis, and others(?) guided it to fruition.

Now it's unethical if an architect does not follow through on these standards.

Yeah!

Thank you for that posting, Harry! PLENTY of credit and praise to go around for this one. David Pill and AIA VT President Megan Nedzinski launched the idea at a COTE New England conference last June. After the conference, Megan led the task force. Nadav Malin was a great resource and thought leader (as always), Clark Brockman (the conference keynote) provided motivation and inspiration, Gunnar Hubbard with Nadav, Megan, David, and me were the principal proponents and negotiators. Andrea Love, Jesse Thompson, and Stephanie Horowitz rounded out the steering committee. (I hope I didn't miss anybody, but it's entirely possible. Others?) But NONE of this would have happened without 2018 AIA President Carl Elefante's leadership. His position: "I want this to happen this year". He opened the door to AIA General Counsel and the AIA National Ethics Council and delivered the amendments to the AIA Board of Directors. I credit Carl for making a real difference at the AIA.
