NC-v4 SSc6:Light pollution reduction

Marquis Light for the facade

We are working on a theater that has some uplight from Marquis light on the front of the building. Does this disqualify the project from the LEED light pollutoin points due to the marquis lighting on the front of the building, or are those marquis lights exempt, and we only need to remove the uplight component from the new east facade lights? We are trying to determine if we need to remove the uplight ?

Does this research regarding this exemption apply:

  • Exemption Category: Theatre marquee lighting often falls under exemptions for specialized advertising/directional signage or lighting for theatrical purposes.
  • Operational Requirements: To qualify for exemptions in many cases, especially regarding facade lighting in Lighting Zones (LZ) 2, 3, or 4, the lights must have automatic controls to turn off between midnight and 6 a.m..
  • Signage Rules: Internally illuminated signage is generally exempt from the strict light trespass requirements.
  • Documentation: Even if exempt from the maximum wattage or BUG (Backlight, Uplight, and Glare) rating requirements, the lighting still needs to be documented and identified as exempt in the LEED submission.

Denise,I believe that the only exemption that might apply would be: "lighting that is used solely for façade and landscape lighting in MLO lighting zones 3 and 4, and is automatically turned off from midnight until 6 a.m.;"BUT your project must be in Lz3

Thanks I was also thinking this and I think we are in Z3. Does the signage count as 'facade lighting' since it is more or advertising and doesn't really light up the facade?
