NC-2009 SSc4.2:Alternative Transportation—Bicycle Storage and Changing Rooms

Construction Submittal

Is there any additional items that are required during the construction submittal? We have a secure storage room designed per a bike rack we are specifying, and lots of space to maneuver through the room, but our client is now asking if secure storage is enough, and whether they need to actually install bike racks. It appears that storage rooms have been accepted sometimes, does anybody know any definitive rules on this?

The secure storage room meets the primary intent of the credit. We've sometimes been asked to show a dotted line indicating the space for each bike. Will the users just be leaning bikes against the wall? You might run into problems if you have more than a few bikes. One common approach is large hooks that allow the bike to hang from its front wheel and rest on its back wheel. Depending on the size of the room and the number of bike users you have a variety of options might work, but from a practical standpoint you'll want to provide some kind of support.
