I’m currently working on a LEED certification of a public natatorium that has three swimming pool tanks. I’m aware that ASHRAE 90.1 mandatory requirement 7.4.5.2 requires that all heated pools are “equipped with a vapor retardant pool cover on or at the water surfaces”. This doesn’t seem to be a problem for this project in two of the pool tanks since they have regular rectangular shapes. However, the third pool tank – that will be used for recreational activities only – doesn’t have a regular shape. It has more like an elliptical “bean” shape type and we are having problems finding pool covers suitable for this specific shape (standardized market solutions do not exist and a special cover must be designed with very high costs that will lead to very low paybacks).Furthermore this swimming pool represents only 20% of projects' total pool area. Having said this, do you think that LEED certification of this public natatorium is possible without covering the “bean” shape swimming pool?

You have to meet the mandatory provisions. I can see that an automatic pool cover would be a problem. Have you looked into a manual cover stored on a deck-side reel. This should be easily doable and relatively inexpensive.
